Waikato’s Groundcover Landscaping owner Graeme Hopkins says native plants provide texture while being more drought tolerant and requiring less maintenance.

He says conserving water and reducing run-off is becoming a necessary trend, with environmentally conscious gardeners and a changing climate.

Creating rain gardens is becoming necessary (and in some cases a council requirement) to contain rainwater on site and reduce any run-off to neighbouring properties or putting excess strain on public stormwater systems. Choosing drought tolerant plants, mulching gardens to retain moisture and the use of efficient dripline irrigation systems keep water usage to a minimum, he says.

Edibles interspersed through ornamental and native gardens are becoming more common, as opposed to separate and dedicated vegetable gardens and orchards. Although kitchen potager gardens with raised garden beds are still high on the wish list, says Hopkins.

He says vertical gardens are trending in urban areas or limited spaces where traditional gardens may not be feasible. Vertical gardens can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space while improving air quality, soaking up heat and providing additional insulation.

Growing your own food in raised potager gardens has always been popular, and more so now as young families and older generations become concerned about the environment and chemical-based food production. There is also a move towards growing more edibles throughout traditional and ornamental gardens.
